Gift buying is an arse, isn’t it? It’s expensive mind-reading, basically. In my family, we now write incredibly specific Christmas lists for each other, which takes away 99% of the thoughtfulness of present-buying, but at least you don’t have to feign delight at things you don’t really want.
For this special Christmas issue of Nesting, especially for my paid subscribers, I asked some of my former Nesting interviewees to choose just one thing they want for Christmas. Who knows, perhaps their choices will inspire your own gift-buying. Or maybe you’ll end up treating yourself.
Settle in, it’s a long one…
ANNA + NINA CANDLESTICKS, £25
Esther Coren - author, journalist and founder of Substack newsletter The Spike
“What I really want is a collection of - maybe three or five - colourful glass candlesticks from Anna + Nina at Selfridges. And I think this year, I can actually make this happen as my husband takes my children shopping for me every year and my son is now 10 so totally capable of taking discreet instruction. “If you end up in the homeware department,” I will whisper in his ear, “just say you think mum would like some colourful glass candleholders.” No-one will suspect a thing!”
NAVY GREY CARDIGAN, £265
Melissa Twigg - Features writer @ The Telegraph
“If my husband is feeling particularly flush, I would love a cardigan from Navy Grey - a brand that I think makes the best British knitwear out there. Our first baby is due three days before Christmas and I feel like a warm, well-made button-up is the best chance I have of getting into the New Year with maybe half an iota of style.”
